RNZAF WWII Pilot Wing by 'Mayer & Kane'
A very hard to find WWII Wing of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. These Pilot Wings were the only metal type worn by Commonweath Pilots in WWII.
Made in Wellington by the jewellers Mayer and Kane and were only ever issued to aircrew in the Pacific theatre.
Stamped on the back with 44 and M.K
This example is unusual in that it has been made with a pin back which would have made alot of sense in the tropics for easy removal. Most I have seen have had lugs with a splitter pin and even metal plate on the back.
The Wing is made of silver plate on bronze and is 75mm wide and 22mm high. In excellent condition with no wear to the silver, only patination with age.
I have included a few pictures of this Wing being worn by Pilots of 23 (Fighter) Squadron in 1945.
